You are now listening to Leverage for Growth. Hey everybody this is Jesse P. Gilmore founder of Niche in Control and creator of the Leverage for Growth, welcome to the daily leverage edition.
Today’s topic is this “Choosing Your Narrative”. Sit back, relax and welcome to today’s daily leverage.
So this morning, I was doing my morning routine of stacking and reflecting on what had happened last night.
If you have been following these daily leverage episodes, you know from the Death and Rebirth episode that we were having to make a difficult decision about our family dog.
Our dog was not doing well and his health declined a lot over the last year and continued to get worse recently.
Over the weekend, he had stopped eating or drinking.
We tried what we could but last night we had to make a difficult decision to help him pass on.
The family has been through a lot of emotions as the kids have never experienced death in the family before and the dog was the first pet of the Gilmore family.
This morning during my stack, I realized that I had a choice of how to view the situation.
Do I remember all the times that the dog was not doing well and the frustration about not being able to save him?
Or do I focus on all the good times that we had, that he came into our world and helped me and my wife get closer when we were dating and prepared us for kids?
I had a choice of which story or narrative I decide to focus on.
From there, I make the micro decisions that align with the story.
While a dogs death can be traumatic or something we can cope with easily, the story that we tell ourselves about the death is what matters
This is true about most of life
The things that happen in our world are part of the equation but the story we tell ourselves about the things that happen are what matter
When we can consciously choose the narrative as if we are writing our own story while we are also the main character, we can direct our thoughts, beliefs and actions towards stories that empower us and others in the process
Why is this important?
Many times as entrepreneurs, we have things that happen in our world
The stories about the things that happen are formulated in our minds, many time without conscious choice or awareness
However, when we can understand and assess the stories that we are telling ourselves, we can inject the story that lifts us up
That empowers us to continue to go forth
A story that is supportive of who we desire to be and where we want to go
This is mindset at its fundamental level
Choosing the narrative that gets us more of what we want
If we had the opportunity to choose any narrative about the things that happen to us, which would you want to choose?
One that empowers you?
Or one that puts you at the whim of circumstances?
For me, I am choosing empowering stories. Daily.
Now it is time for daily leverage.
Where in your world whether in your life or business, have you been allowing the narrative of your story be formed by default or the subconscious without much conscious choice?
Is it in your life with your health or body?
Is it in your life with your spirituality or self-direction?
Is it in your relationships with your spouse, partner or kids?
Is it in your business or finances or team?
Once you have located where you have been not choosing an empowering narrative and you know what you need to change.
My question to you is this…
What are you willing and able to do about it today?
That is the end of our daily leverage. This is Jesse P. Gilmore and you have been listening to the Leverage for Growth podcast.
