You are now listening to leverage for growth. Hey everybody. This is Jesse Gilmore, founder of Niche in Control and creator of leverage for growth. Welcome to the agency Leverage Edition. Today I’m here with Rob Aurelius, the co-founder of RC G media, a digital marketing agency on a mission to increase your social visibility by creating the right strategies, success, and results.
00:01:26:12 – 00:01:46:07
Thanks for coming to our show today, Rob. Thanks, Jesse, for having me. It’s such an honor and a privilege. Absolutely. Can you tell us a little bit about the history and background of your agency? Yes. So ACG media started off as an R collective group back in 2013. it started off with a former, business partner of mine named Rick.
00:01:46:14 – 00:02:05:17
And, at the time, we had been working for a entertainment agency called All Souls Entertainment in New York City. we didn’t like the way we were being treated, and we felt like we had so much to bring to the table with so much value. So we started a in our in our collective group and our collective group is named after my last name, Aurelius.
00:02:05:17 – 00:02:29:20
And his last name, y’all. so we started off as a collective. I have a background in marketing, sales, advertisement, promotion, digital marketing, you know, social media, you name it. And he had a background in creative, and he also had a background in film. That’s how I met him. I met him because I actually was, actor in two of his short films.
00:02:29:22 – 00:02:44:29
And to me, I think he was like genius. And I always told him, you know, he’s African-American. So I remember telling him, you know, you can be in the black Quentin Tarantino someday. And he always used to laugh, and I used to say that, but that’s how much respect they had for him. And I still do have respect for him.
00:02:45:02 – 00:03:06:12
so, you know, when we started this business, we literally sat down and said, I can do this, this, this, this and this. And he goes, well, I can do this, this and this and this is that. So I said, how about let’s bring all of that together, turn that into services, and let’s start a business. So we started in our collective group in June of 20, 2013, and in October we had a launch party.
00:03:06:12 – 00:03:39:21
And, we had so many of friends, so many associates that came to support us. And we introduced it to them. And, you know, at the time, we were pretty much, one of our first clients was actually a, comedian, and I forget his name, unfortunately. But I remember him reaching out to us because he was a big fan of George Carlin, and he was asking me and my partner Rick, if we were able to help and get George Carlin’s name on a certain street in Manhattan.
00:03:39:21 – 00:03:57:05
You know, like what? Not. And I’m not sure if you ever seen this, but in New York City, sometimes, like, especially when someone passes away and there were like either a legendary person or just like, maybe a police officer or firefighter or something. They’ll honor them and they’ll put their name on the street, and it will be like, for example, George Carlin Way, you know?
00:03:57:08 – 00:04:17:21
So, you know, we had just started and, you know, this guy reached out to us based upon the fact that he felt like we had a lot of resources because of our backgrounds. So, you know, it was something new, something different. I didn’t think I would ever be asked a question like that. And I tried, you know, and it’s not the first time either.
00:04:17:24 – 00:04:35:22
a few years ago, I’m sure you know who Nancy Sinatra is. She is the daughter of the famous Frank Sinatra. She follows me on Twitter, and I’m not sure how this happened, but she was asking years ago if her father’s statue, there’s a statue of her father that apparently is at a museum here in New York.
00:04:35:22 – 00:05:02:07
I don’t know exactly where. And she claimed that she had reached out to one of our old mayors, Giuliani, at the time, and asked him if his, statue could actually be put in Times Square because, you know, his famous song New York, New York. And apparently, like when 911 happens, for some reason, the statue was put into, museum and I feel like she kind of lost, contact with Giuliani because Giuliani also had was in the office.
00:05:02:07 – 00:05:20:01
And then Bloomberg came in, who was our our next mayor. And she wasn’t able to reach out to anyone. So, you know, our previous mayor, his name was de Blasio. She read she was looking for a way to reach out to him. And somehow, someway, when they opened up my Twitter and in my mentions, I see someone saying, reach out to Rob Aurelius.
00:05:20:01 – 00:05:36:27
You know, maybe he can help. And I said, wait, what? And I said, how can I help Nancy Sinatra get her father’s statue in Times Square? And I remember her actually DMing me, and she also like, mentioned me, and she was like, can you make this happen? Can you help me get my father’s statue in Times Square? And I was like, oh my God.
00:05:36:27 – 00:05:56:23
And I remember asking one of my neighbors about the situation and she goes to me, well, why would she want to do that? Her father was from Hoboken, new Jersey. And when you go to Hoboken, there’s Frank Sinatra drive, this Frank Sinatra Park, there’s Frank Sinatra. There’s actually a restaurant called lies named after one of his songs. So she says, you know, Frank Sinatra was such a, you know, Hoboken native.
00:05:56:23 – 00:06:18:20
Why does she want a statue of him in New York? And I said, well, think about it. New York, New York, you know, like and Sinatra was very well known in New York. And the Rat Pack hung out in New York all the time. So things like this to me eventually became opportunities. and I said to myself, this isn’t saint like, you know, when I first, first started working, you know, I used to work regular jobs, used to work at retail store selling clothes.
00:06:18:22 – 00:06:39:25
I used to work at grocery stores packing stuff. You know, I used to be a stock person. when I became a businessman, I never thought about these type of things. And, you know, one of our first clients, as well, was, professional wrestler who used to work for the WB by the name of Jean Statsky.
00:06:39:27 – 00:06:55:16
And I’m a big fan of professional wrestling, especially, you know, when I was a child, I used to watch a little bit of Jeff. I used to watch Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair and Roddy Piper and Bret Hart, all these guys, and I still watch it to this day. But today I kind of also do it from a business standpoint.
00:06:55:18 – 00:07:15:28
So when I, you know, finally spoke to a professional wrestler and I was able to help them with something, it made me feel good because that opened the doors for me. So, you know, here’s a go. maybe like about almost a year before, like almost a year after I started the business, I met Gene Simmons. He had an event.
00:07:16:01 – 00:07:36:17
he was at a charity event. I was actually working for a client of mine who was a designer, and, she was producing a collection for someone, and he was one of the guests there. And I remember meeting him, and I remember talking to him and shaking his hand, giving him my business card to tell him that if you ever needed something for me to reach out, reaches out to me less than 24 hours later to ask me if I could help him get verified on Twitter.
00:07:36:19 – 00:07:54:16
And at the time, he had so many imposter accounts and he wanted people to know it was really him whenever he reached out to someone. So I got him verified. I reached out to a contact at Twitter. This is when the verification process was a little bit easier. Today it’s a little crazy. You know, I don’t know what’s going on with it, but I’ve been hearing a lot of crazy things as of last few weeks.
00:07:54:22 – 00:08:15:28
Anyways, I got him verified in this 48 hours. All I needed for him was just proof of his identity. I got you verified. He gave me a shout out on Twitter that blew up my engagement, you know, on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, because he said if anybody ever needs verified verification services or if anyone ever needs, you know, a marketing gig or whatever, the case would be a promotion reached out to this guy.
00:08:15:28 – 00:08:30:09
Mind you, I didn’t charge you for this service. It was actually pro bono because it was just kind of like trade in value. And I was also trying to get my foot in the door. Little did I know that eventually this was going to introduce me to the world of professional wrestling. From a business standpoint, one thing led to another.
00:08:30:17 – 00:08:48:06
Then I met another professional wrestler whose name is Prince Nona, who works for a company called A. He’s also from Brooklyn, where I’m from, and he also needed the same thing. He needed to be verified. And once I got him verified, I started meeting so many other wrestlers. And, you know, I worked with the independent circuit for a while.
00:08:48:08 – 00:09:11:14
I also worked with a company called Ring of Honor, and then eventually I was able to meet someone from the WWE, and he introduced me to everyone in the locker room, past and present. And he goes by the name Brooklyn Brawler. He’s a legendary, wrestler from the 80s. In the 90s, and, you know, I’m living my dream, you know, the there going to be is a big company now.
00:09:11:21 – 00:09:30:11
It’s a global phenomenon. You know, it’s it’s much more than just professional wrestling. They do a lot of things. They have their own community. They do a lot of charity work. They travel overseas. They actually do shows for the troops that are out in different countries. You know, we had the war going on with, you know, Afghanistan and Iraq and stuff like that.
00:09:30:11 – 00:09:46:05
They were going on. They were going every year, you know, during the holidays to put a show on for these military people just to help them feel good. You know, despite all the stuff that was happening in the world, I wanted to be a part of all of that. I love entertainment. I love, you know, sports.
00:09:46:06 – 00:10:08:02
I’m a big fan of sports. You know, I love baseball. I’m a big Yankee fan. I’m a big San Francisco Giants fan. I love football. I love watching the Super Bowl. I think the Super Bowl is great, and I love watching WWE. WrestleMania is like the Super Bowl. It’s once a year. It’s the biggest event of the year for the world of professional wrestling, and I’ve been going to WrestleMania for five years in a row now.
00:10:08:04 – 00:10:23:11
eventually, at some point when I started helping all these people out, I said to myself, how do I make this part of my business? How do I make this part of me? And I collect it? So I spoke to Ric and I said, Ric, you know, these folks like these athletes and whatever, they could be potential clients.
00:10:23:11 – 00:10:38:24
And, you know, we started signing these people. We started offering services to them. A lot of them were doing outside projects. So what they were asking us was, look, WWE wants a cut. If I do this, do them. So, you know, if I hire you, you know, a smaller agency, you know, what can you do for me?
00:10:38:27 – 00:10:57:12
And, you know, that’s how things kicked off. eventually, unfortunately, Rick and I parted ways because we started having some, you know, creative differences. And, I thought that I was not going to succeed. I thought that the business was going to go down, and, I actually met a new partner. His name is Matty Rock.
00:10:57:15 – 00:11:12:24
He’s like a mentor to me. He’s been my special advisor for ten years now for as long as the business has been around. And I’ve had some people into the, you know, into the company come and go. I still have some people still work with me. I got a guy, in Corpus Christi, Texas. His name is Oscar.
00:11:12:24 – 00:11:30:21
He’s been there from day one. He does all my graphic design videos on my fliers. He does on my website, management and hosting. so we’re actually, in the middle of celebrating our 10th anniversary this year. and I’m super excited. I wasn’t expecting the company to be this, like, you know, to go this far.
00:11:30:24 – 00:11:52:27
I’m still not where I want to be with it. I, of course, there’s always room for growth, and there’s always room for improvement and whatnot. But before the pandemic, I started doing a lot of media stuff. I started becoming more of a media guy. So I was literally getting paid by companies such as inevitably to go to their events, take photos of what was happening, promoted videos and whatnot.
00:11:52:27 – 00:12:13:05
And I started to somehow become some type of a social media influencer. Eventually, I started to realize that some of the services I was offering within our collective group, which is like event management and web hosting and all these other things. I said to myself, look, we do offer a lot of services, but at the same time, we’re more of a social media based company, we’re more online based company, and we’re more of a media company.
00:12:13:05 – 00:12:36:15
We do a lot of media stuff. So eventually, I decided, I think in 2018 to change the name of our CG media, are in our collective to a CG media, and we became a media company. And then eventually, unfortunately, the pandemic came in 2020. And because my business is based online and a lot of it was social media stuff, unfortunately I did lose a lot of clients.
00:12:36:15 – 00:12:50:23
A lot of my clients were like, hey, you know, I’m not going to be able to afford to pay you. I’m not get I’m not qualified for this cheap loan or whatever it was that they were giving out at the time. And they were like, you know, we’re going to do a recess. We don’t know when we’re going to be able to come back.
00:12:51:00 – 00:13:11:12
But, you know, we just can’t keep the retainer with you right now. that unfortunately put me in a funk because, you know, you know, for the most part, the entire world was shutting down little by little. And that caused a lot of people to, you know, lose it because a lot of people were stressed out about if they were going to pay their mortgage, their rent, they’re getting their car, you know, all this stuff.
00:13:11:15 – 00:13:37:25
and I was one of those people, too, that unfortunately did not qualify for a loan. So I had to start looking for options. And what I started doing is I just started reaching out to friends on LinkedIn, the service, and lots of friends on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, everywhere. And I was like, look, if you are starting a business at home now because you have so much time on your hands now, please, if you need marketing, if you need a promotion, whatever the case may be, even if you have a small budget, let me know.
00:13:37:25 – 00:13:54:03
I will work with you. And, you know, around that time I spoke to a good friend of mine who’s a very legendary person, I’m sure you know is he is his name is Ric Flair. He’s one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. And Ric and I were talking and I talked about this a lot in most of my interviews.
00:13:54:03 – 00:14:08:04
But it’s a beautiful story for me and I always love sharing it. I reached out to him because, you know, unfortunately a few years ago he wasn’t doing so well healthwise, and we almost lost him and I was just keeping up with him. I was trying to see how he was doing, see how his marriage was, because he had recently got married.
00:14:08:07 – 00:14:20:24
and we were just talking and, you know, he asked me, how are things with you, how are you handling this pandemic? And I said to him, to be honest, I’m embarrassed to tell you this, but I’m really too terrible. Like I’m doing really bad. Like, I don’t know what how I’m going to pay my rent next month.
00:14:20:24 – 00:14:35:15
I don’t know how I’m going to help my family pay the bills next month. And he goes, oh, I’m sorry to hear that. He goes, is there anything that I can do for you? And I said, well, look, I’m not also the type of person that’s going to go around asking people for favors. I’m not going to be asking people to let me borrow money, whatever the case may be.
00:14:35:18 – 00:14:54:10
So he goes, well, what do you think I can do for you? And all I said to him was, well, you know, I’m I’m doing the best I can. I my company is celebrating its seventh anniversary. At that time it was a seven anniversary in 2020. And I said to him, and, you know, I’m just trying to get people to recognize my business and all of my businesses out there to help me.
00:14:54:13 – 00:15:09:21
So he goes, well, what if I do a video for you, congratulating you for the seven years and probably give you, like, a shout out and let people know that your company is, you know, there to to provide services. And I said, you know, I would appreciate that. You know, normally Ric Flair charges for these type of things.
00:15:09:21 – 00:15:26:15
And I remember one time I asked them like, how much would you charge for a video? Because I was working for a client at the time who had a cigar store, and he said, how much will Ric Flair charge me for a video to endorsement? And I remember asking him and he goes, I normally charge 50,000. You know, I don’t I don’t go any lower than 30.
00:15:26:19 – 00:15:47:23
But he was like, if it’s for you, 10,000. And I said, sheesh, $10,000 is a lot of money. So I remember telling the guy and I was like, look, are you willing to pay him $10,000? I said, he’s charging 50. He’s actually giving you 40,000 off. You know, it’s because it’s me. So anyways, I told him, look, I hope that this is something that I don’t have to end up paying a lot for in the future, because don’t worry about it.
00:15:47:23 – 00:16:09:19
Just send me your email address and I’ll send you something in the next few days. Evidently, the day before my anniversary or like around midnight, I got an email from him and I opened it up and it was a video where he’s congratulating me for seven years. it broke my, you know, I was in tears because never did I ever imagine, especially, you know, with Ric Flair not even being a client of mine.
00:16:09:22 – 00:16:27:01
Never did I imagine, ever receiving any type of endorsement or such a beautiful message from someone. And, you know, it was a little funny because he wasn’t a character. He was saying a few things that, you know, he says he was going in the video, but believe it or not, just see this video. When I actually posted it, I had lost about 20 clients.
00:16:27:01 – 00:16:42:05
I remember writing down the amount of clients that I lost, and I was like, I lost 20 clients. That’s a lot of clients. And I literally gained 20 plus more after I posted that video, because then everybody was reaching out to me. I saw the video, Ric Flair’s interview. I saw them, you know, what can you do for me?
00:16:42:05 – 00:16:59:02
I heard that you’re an agency. The marketing company. What are you doing? How can you help me? And then people said, like my I remember Oscar calling me and tell me, Rob, there was a spike overnight on our website the day you posted that video, we had like about 2000 people and 2000 visitors on our website, and I said, I don’t believe it.
00:16:59:02 – 00:17:24:13
So he sent me the stats because, you know, you could track the stats. And I said, these are all organic or real people. He goes, oh yeah. And, you know, ever since then, I do have to say thanks to Ric Flair. And just overall like the support that I received, RSG was back on track. and it’s back on track and, you know, as the recession, and, you know, the unfortunately the pandemic that we were dealing with and kind of still dealing with, things started getting better.
00:17:24:13 – 00:17:41:06
People started going back to work. Some people created their own companies, their own businesses, their own brands during the pandemic, and they’re still running it till this day. Some of them are running it as a side hustle. Some of them are running it as a full time job. And, you know, I’m able to assist these people. So I’m thankful for that.
00:17:41:08 – 00:18:10:02
I’m thankful for the ten years that we’re celebrating, in June. And, you know, like I said, I’m having, the time of my life. I’m so thankful for everything. And, most importantly, not just the fact that I have my own business, but I also want to be able to help contribute and help people like, you know, the future, you know, the future generations to come of people that want to have a business like mine and be able to get back to them and share with them some insight as to how I got into the business, what did I do?
00:18:10:04 – 00:18:25:17
And some advice, because, you know, you always have to give people advice when they’re, you know, about to get into something just to make sure that they do it wholeheartedly and not just for the money and not just for what they think is going to happen. Because, you know, there is sometimes people that want to do like the quick get rich scheme.
00:18:25:22 – 00:18:46:25
And I always tell people sometimes that doesn’t always work out in your favor. I think if you just put in hard work and you solidify yourself and you show how much merit and character you have, I think that will actually help you eventually have so many doors open for you. And what do you say that I mean, we talked about a lot of different kind of pivots and different things with it.
00:18:46:25 – 00:19:07:04
What would you say if you were to summarize like maybe 1 or 2 main kind of tips or advice that you would pass on to our audience? You know, maybe people that are, a little bit behind you, maybe not at the ten years and they’re still trying to figure out exactly how to navigate this. could you summarize kind of like, a little bit about advice and tips for them?
00:19:07:06 – 00:19:22:23
Of course. Look, the average business and you and I both know this doesn’t survive. I, we’ve seen a lot of mom and pop shops close, especially here in New York, there was a lot of mom and pop shops that were open for years, like for example, Cat’s Deli, which was around for so many years, finally closed its doors.
00:19:23:00 – 00:19:43:28
Why? Because sometimes what happens is time changes. You either adapting, you perish. And this is something that I think people should focus on is either adapting with the times, which is the now, or you’re going to perish. You know, a lot of companies like to be old school. I noticed that when you go to diners, sometimes they want to have the old registers that they used to type in.
00:19:43:28 – 00:19:59:17
They don’t want to touchscreen, and that’s fine. But the thing is, you have to understand at some point that registers are going to stop working and you’re going to need to do register. And now they don’t make those type of registers anymore. Now the registers are touchscreen. So my advice to people is if you have an old school mindset that’s fine.
00:19:59:20 – 00:20:22:06
If you’re an old soul, that’s fine. That’s beautiful. But you know, try to make sure that you adapt and keep up to things. Keep up with up to date with things because the fact of the matter is that makes customers feel better. They feel comfortable. Sometimes people feel like, oh, look, if I’m hiring you for something and you’re using old technology, how advanced can you be?
00:20:22:08 – 00:20:50:27
How much value does your work have? If you know the work that you’re offering to me, like how much value does it have if you’re still operating from like a very old fashioned, you know, standpoint? So my recommendation, my advice to people is that, you know, to take advantage of technology to so many things today. You know, there’s, you know, cameras that like, like your phone cameras like the iPhone, like, I use, like I personally have an iPhone because I love the camera.
00:20:51:00 – 00:21:05:28
I do a lot of digital marketing. I do a lot of photos and videos, and, when I don’t want to walk around with my camera, I use my phone. So, you know, make an investment. Always remember, if you’re selling a business, everything is an investment. Eventually you can also be right right off as well too.
00:21:06:05 – 00:21:20:18
So if you need to get a laptop, invest in that. If you need to get a tripod on a camera, invest in that. If you need to get a small office space just to work out of so you have your own space to yourself, and you can have somewhere to operate from and possibly have like people come and have a meeting with you.
00:21:20:19 – 00:21:35:26
Would not I recommend that don’t meet with people like coffee shops. You know that that’s something that work back in the day today. You know if you have your own space, if you just show people that you are established, people will take you more serious, you know what I’m saying? And that’s what I try to tell everyone that I speak to.
00:21:36:02 – 00:21:58:03
You want your company to last long. I didn’t think it was going to be, over ten years. And here we are. But if you want to last long, just be honest. Be truthful, you know, be respectful. you know, if you ever have issues, because it might happen. You if you have issues with the client or with the business that you may partner up with or affiliate with, you know, don’t try to burn bridges, try to find a solution.
00:21:58:10 – 00:22:14:04
Even if you guys are still going to part ways, try to part ways with someone the right way. That’s what’s happened with me. Unfortunately, there has been some people that I partner. I, you know, parted ways with one of my old business partners I had to part ways with, and I did it in a good way. I did it in a way where no one’s talking bad about me.
00:22:14:04 – 00:22:28:03
No one’s trash talking me. No one’s, you know, putting a bad review. I mean, in ten years that the company has been in business, I’ve never seen a bad review online. And I’ve said to people, you know, this is insane. Like, I look up all these reviews and I see bad reviews from some of the best places I go to.
00:22:28:07 – 00:22:44:24
And then I also see good reviews. But when it comes to media, I can’t see a bad review because even if someone is about to give me a bad review or someone is not unhappy with my services, I always try to do what’s right. And, you know, relationships are very important, especially the ones that you want to keep.
00:22:44:26 – 00:22:59:21
If you keep a relationship for a long time, you the opportunities are endless. You know, if I start a relationship with you today and I could do something small for you today, maybe five years down the line, someone is creating a new business and you might recommend me to help that person with that. So I always value that.
00:22:59:21 – 00:23:15:17
I always respect that you know? And that’s what I try to tell people, you know, don’t try to just make or make money off of people, try to work with them, try to actually have a real relationship with them, like a bond. Trust is build over, you know, it’s not build overnight. Trust takes a long time to to actually form.
00:23:15:20 – 00:23:32:00
And once someone feels that they can trust you, forget about it. You know they’re never going to steer you wrong. They’re never going to look past you. They’re always going to acknowledge you, always going to respect you, and they’re always going to give you your merit. And those are the things that I receive today. I receive a lot of phone calls and text messages and just sometimes I’m hanging out with these people.
00:23:32:02 – 00:23:44:06
People will sit there and they’ll talk to me. But, Rob, I appreciate what you’ve done for me. I appreciate how honest you are. I appreciate the work that you put. You know, the hard work that you show people, because that’s what I do. How I started working with them, how I started working with all the people that I work with.
00:23:44:06 – 00:24:03:26
I literally solidified myself. I, you know, did things for free sometimes just to prove my worth. And, you know, some people appreciated it, some people did it. But the people that did appreciate, I appreciate them because they’re the ones that are helping me stay in business. And I’m very thankful for that. And that’s my advice to anyone that starting a business now or struggling with a business, just be honest.
00:24:03:26 – 00:24:20:20
Be honest with yourself. Be honest with your clients. Be honest with your coworkers, with your partners. just do everything with passion and do everything with love. It’s like kind of like being a chef. You want the food, it tastes good. You got to have the right ingredients. You got to do it with love and positive energy. So it’s the same thing with every every other business that’s out there.
00:24:20:23 – 00:24:52:18
Once you show the love and the passion and how much you really care about something, the positive energy will flourish. Cool. And lastly, what’s the best way for people to get in touch with you? Or do you have any offers for them they could take advantage of? Yes, of course.
